Businesses must balance profits WITH human welfare. One doesn’t come at the expense of the other, rather, they are intimately connected with each other as well as to global environmental health. Instead of judging “good” solely based on profits, “good” should be judged by how businesses impact society.
Amongst all this angst what the future might hold for tourism and the many individuals affected, there is no doubt people will travel again to see their loved ones, and people will long for going on holiday after months of staying at home. When that time comes, we need to have a blueprint ready for a tourism industry that prioritises humanity over profits if we want (the industry) to survive indeed.
The dominant style of human management is what is termed as the Homo economicus standard. Homo is the Latin term for “modern man”, while economicus refers to the economy. The biggest problem with this arrangement is that we are Homo sapiens. We’re driven by a separate set of innate needs - hence, a grievous mismatch of values.

This community is connecting at the Indian Academy of Management Conference at the Indian Institute of Management – Trichy, where there are several paper sessions, and an Improv workshop and a panel on Humanistic Management.

Dr. Sophia Town earned her Ph.D. in organizational communication from Arizona State University. Her research, which spans the fields of organizational communication and management, is humanistic, use-inspired and guided by one key question: “How can scholars and practitioners promote human flourishing in organizations?”
Anke Winchenbach is an ESRC funded PhD researcher and teaching fellow in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, UK. Her research focuses on understanding livelihood diversification from fishing into tourism in coastal communities in the UK. Utilising dignity as the guiding concept, the project will explore how people experience and understand their lives in relation to their work in times of social change and declining natural resources
